I painted this years ago, at a very emo time. Since then I’ve completed two picture books, created some poems, finished Nanowrimo and am juggling several works-in-progress. I’d like to say that my creative life and productivity are smooth as molasses but that would be flat out lying. Still, I’m having fun. I love what I do and I learn as my process unfolds. And yes… I do have my emo moments. ;-)

"Creativity is piercing the mundane

It dropped below 10 degrees that night in NYC. I roamed the city, taking pics with my lomo camera, wearing a thin trench coat over oodles of clothing, a knit cap and a tighly wound scarf. The synthetic leather gloves I brought on the trip (I thought i was so prepared!) did not keep my hands warm enough. The bakery was closed but it looked very warm and inviting, especially since I was standing outside shivering, trying to keep my ice-cold hands steady for the shot. Holding my hands around a steaming cup of hot cocoa and chomping into a cookie would have been the perfect cure.

Title: San Francisco Lehua

This illustration was used on posters, postcards and tees for Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu’s 2002 show, The Hula Show: Stories of the Lehua. It symbolizes the unique connection between Hawai’i and the San Francisco Bay Area which is home to many Halau Hulas. Last fall, I donated a black and white limited edition giclee print to Na Lei Hulu’s Gala auction. I plan to have some limited edition prints available in the near future.

"There was a star that danced
